PHASE 01: THE CHALLENGE
Putting a Hidden Gem on the Map
Amami Oshima sits halfway between mainland Japan and Okinawa. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site, often called the “Galapagos of the East” because of its rare wildlife. But to the outside world, it is virtually unknown.
This created a massive hurdle for Amami Adventures: How do you build trust in a luxury eco-tourism destination people have never heard of?
Local competitors were using generic, tropical clip-art. We had to go the other way. The client needed a visual identity that felt high-end enough for Western tourists to trust with their safety, yet rugged enough to handle the mud and rain of the jungle.
PHASE 02: CULTURAL CRAFTSMANSHIP
The Kanji of Adventure
This brand mark was not created digitally. The process began with traditional ink on paper.
Brand Leader Sunny Bamford hand-painted the initial strokes to capture the authentic energy of the brush. We then digitised and vectorised these original Japanese calligraphy marks, refining the rough ink into a precision brand symbol that retains its human touch while being scalable for any application.
PHASE 03: THE DNA
Designed for the Elements
A tourism brand lives in the real world, not on a screen. It gets wet, muddy, and sun-bleached.
We rejected bright “tourist neon.” Instead, we developed a colour palette sampled directly from the island—deep Indigo (Amami Blue) and volcanic earth tones. This allows the staff uniforms to blend into the environment rather than clashing with it.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION
The Grid System: We engineered the corporate stationery with strict print tolerances. The crop marks and bleed guides ensure the Kanji strokes remain sharp and legible, even on textured paper stock.

RETAIL APPLICATION
Wearable Identity: A branded apparel design concept created for the humid Amami climate. The logo is embroidered for durability, creating a premium touchpoint that guests can take home.
